Bengaluru Suburban Rail gets ₹1,513 crore boost with 153 metro-style coaches

K RIDE has placed a ₹1,513.75 crore order with Chennai’s ICF for 153 AC metro style coaches for Bengaluru’s suburban rail, boosting plans to launch key corridors on time Bengaluru’s long-awaited suburban rail dream has moved a step closer to reality with a major order placed for metro-style train coaches. Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE) has issued a work order to Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for 153 air-conditioned, broad-gauge “metro-type” coaches, giving fresh momentum to the flagship project. The contract, worth ₹1,513.75 crore, will cater to train requirements on Corridor-2 and Corridor-4 of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project. As per the order, awarded on May 6, 2026, ICF must begin supplying the coaches within the next 18 months, a timeline that aligns with the target to open the Chikkabanavara–Yeshwanthpur stretch under Corridor-2 to the public on schedule. Officials said the upcoming rake sets will feature fully air-conditioned, metro-style interiors designed for high-frequency suburban operations, aiming to ease daily commute pressures on Bengaluru’s overburdened road network. An official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between K-RIDE and ICF is expected to be signed soon to formalise technical and commercial terms. ICF will be responsible for the complete design and production of the rolling stock, along with quality inspection, integration of systems, testing and commissioning before the trains are deployed for passenger service. The agency will also coordinate closely with signalling, traction and power supply, and platform screen door contractors to ensure seamless system compatibility. In addition, ICF must secure all mandatory approvals from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and comply with stringent RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) standards, which are critical for the safe and efficient operation of the new corridors. Planners say the order is a key milestone that brings Bengaluru’s suburban rail network closer to offering a metro-like experience for daily commuters.
